Aaron Ramsdale Arsenal future talks set for summer after Mikel Arteta hint

Mikel Arteta has hinted that talks over Aaron Ramsdale’s future will take place this summer.

The England international established himself as a crucial member of the Arsenal side after his arrival in 2021 and only signed a new contract with Arsenal last May. Since then though, he has gone on to lose his starting spot to summer signing David Raya.

Ramsdale will make his first appearance since January’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in this weekend’s Premier League clash against Brentford with Raya ineligible due to loan restrictions. Despite having handed the 25-year-old just 10 appearances this season though, Arteta has insisted that his and Ramsdale’s relationship remains strong.

The connection, on a personal level, goes both ways very much,” the Spaniard told reporters. “I am really happy to make the call that we made as a club to sign him, because it was very controversial to start with. We helped a lot to change his career in a really powerful way. I am really happy that he came here and he has done what he has done for us so far.”

Regardless of that strong bond though, speculation remains rife that Ramsdale could leave Arsenal this summer. The former Sheffield United stopper has two years remaining on his current contract, although Arsenal have the option to trigger a further 12 month extension.

With Raya now firmly established as the Gunners’ number one though, it is thought by many that Ramsdale could move on this summer, with Chelsea and Newcastle being touted as potential suitors. For now though, Arteta has insisted that all talk over the 25-year-old’s future will be saved until the summer, with Arsenal’s primary focus currently on the Premier League title race.

Now is the season, now is tomorrow, now is what we have done today and how can we improve tomorrow,” Arteta said when asked if discussions had taken place over Ramsdale’s situation already. “And those talks are for much after, I think.”
