Alan Shearer addresses Gabriel Jesus title claim as honest Arsenal point made

Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy have both heaped praise on Arsenal frontman Gabriel Jesus Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has refused to buy into the notion that Arsenal can’t win the Premier League title with Gabriel Jesus as their starting striker. Jesus has scored just once in the Premier League this term, albeit having played limited minutes due to a couple of injuries.

But that hasn’t stopped speculation regarding the Gunners signing a new centre-forward, with some fans and pundits alike arguing that Mikel Arteta’s side won’t be able to win the title with the 26-year-old leading the line. Jesus enjoyed an excellent all-around performance on Saturday as the north London outfit beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1, with Shearer speaking on the striker debate after the game.

Speaking about the Arsenal frontman on BBC Match of the Day, Shearer said: “He’s not a goalscorer, he never has been. When you look at his numbers, he brings more to Arsenal’s game than goals, he’s got one in nine this season. That will improve and that has to improve.
I’m not going to say they can’t win the league without having a 20-goal striker because (Manchester) City did it with (Ilkay) Gundogan when he got 14 or 15 I think. Chelsea did it with (Frank) Lampard when he had 14 or 15.
So, it can be done but this Arsenal team, I mean other players are going to have to chip in as they’re doing for them to maintain their challenge and indeed if they are going to go on and win in.” The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League table, four points clear of Manchester City in second, although Pep Guardiola’s men do have a game in hand on their title rivals.

Liverpool, who also have played one game less than Arsenal, are five points off the top and former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy also chipped in on Jesus, praising the ex-City attacker. “There’s lots to admire about Jesus”, Murphy added.
