Arsenal could now bid £42m to sign defensive midfielder who’s scored more goals than James Maddison

Arsenal are now willing to make a bid to sign Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners’ recruitment has mostly been fantastic over the last few years. Even the players who were heavily doubted are starting to come good, which shows that Mikel Arteta‘s eye for talent is exceptional. The next name on the Arsenal boss’ shortlist is reportedly Koopmeiners.

Arsenal could bid to sign Teun Koopmeiners
Arsenal are almost guaranteed to strengthen their midfield in the summer.

The Gunners could lose Thomas Partey, while Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny’s contracts are set to expire at the end of the season as well. If they all leave, Mikel Arteta’s side will be really short in the middle of the park.

A number of top-quality midfielders have been linked with a move to Arsenal, and after scouting him three months ago, a report claims Arsenal could bid for Teun Koopmeiners.

TuttoJuve claim this week that the Dutch defensive midfielder is on the radar of Juventus, who are also looking to strengthen their midfield in the summer.

However, The Old Lady just cannot compete financially with English clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, who the report claims could all submit offers between £42 million and 51 million (€50m-€60m) to sign the midfielder at the end of the season.

Koopmeiners, who joined Atalanta from AZ Alkmaar in 2021, has a contract that does not expire until the summer of 2027.

Koopmeiners is a goalscoring defensive midfielder
Defensive midfielders are never expected to score a ton of goals, but Teun Koopmeiners is a special player whose numbers are just remarkable.

In his last two seasons at AZ Alkmaar, the Dutchman scored 33 goals and provided 10 assists, which is a stunning return for a number six. He scored 10 goals for Atalanta last season and has already matched that record this campaign.

To put that into perspective, two of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League – Martin Odegaard and James Maddison – have both scored less goals than him in all competitions this season.

Koopmeiners would be a great addition to many sides this summer, and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal will actually make a bid to sign him.
