Arsenal given £43m transfer green light to sign Chelsea target and exact Mykhailo Mudryk revenge

Arsenal and Chelsea could lock horns over the signing of another winger in the upcoming transfer window

Emmanuel Petit has encouraged Arsenal to sign Chelsea target Nico Williams this summer. The 21-year-old winger has been linked with a move to the Premier League recently as he continues to impress for Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish top flight.

Williams, who sees his contract at the San Mamés expire in 2027, has featured 23 times for Ernesto Valverde’s side in La Liga this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists. He’s played a crucial role for Bilbao in their pursuit of Champions League qualification, operating just as well on the right flank as the left.

While leading Los Leones’ bid for top four, the Spain international has reportedly courted the interest of Chelsea – among numerous other top European clubs. According to The Guardian, the west London outfit are weighing up a move for Williams, who has a £43million release clause in his contract.

However, Petit has urged Arsenal to hijack the Blues’ bid. In an interview with Betway, the Frenchman said: “Would Nico Williams be a good fit at Arsenal? Absolutely, he’s been one of the best young players in Spain this season.

He’s got five goals and ten assists already this season. He’s fast, powerful and always runs towards the goal and facing defenders with great skills and dribbling.

“He can play on the right or left and every time I watch Athletic, they always give him the ball because he’s so good at facing two defenders. He’d be a very good addition to any team as his skills are devastating. I love players who are always provoking defenders.

Ironically, Chelsea hijacked the previous winger which Arsenal tried to sign – Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukraine international was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the January 2022 before the Blues wrapped up a deal at the eleventh hour.
