Arsenal plot staggering £64m transfer for Edu favourite as unmatched Kylian Mbappe offer made

Arsenal won 5-0 on Saturday but the result somehow also reaffirmed some of the ongoing worries. Beating Crystal Palace at home after a 10-day winter break has not totally eroded the issues.

Mikel Arteta’s men once more relied on corners to punish Palace and the two late Gabriel Martinelli goals, as well as Leandro Trossard’s win securing third, came from counter-attacks, meaning the questions hanging over Arsenal don’t go away.

Can this side break down and punish a low block? If they don’t have to for the rest of the season then it will all be fine but with West Ham again on the horizon it certainly feels like the job is not yet done for Arteta.

It is in this light that football.london has taken a critical view at the latest transfer stories from the January market, starting once more with Kylian Mbappe.

It could so easily be Karim Benzema that is being discussed. Reports emerged on Tuesday suggesting he has asked Al Ittihad to let him leave this month after becoming unhappy. With Arsenal one of the sides looking for a new striker it only makes perfect sense for them to be linked with their long-term jewel.

However, Benzema has been the talk of many recently so let’s look at Mbappe again. The Paris Saint-Germain forward is said to right now have an unmatched offer on the table from his current club, but it doesn’t swing on money or competition

Mbappe is believed to be demanding an effective three-month period where he is unavailable domestically after the end of this season. Although that coincides with pre-season it would still see him playing football as he is planning for big roles at Euro 2024 in Germany and then the Olympics in Paris.

The latter event is said to be a total deal-breaker for him. With logistical problems being thrown up by this it has not been ruled out that he signs a pre-agreement with a club before joining after the Olympics in order to save what could be up to £17million in wages.
