Arsenal transfer news LIVE as Matteo Guendouzi speaks out amid Saka and Martinelli injury latest

All the very latest Arsenal news, views and transfer rumours from football.london with updates on Saka and Martinelli injures, title race, Matteo Guendouzi and Porto Champions League clash

Arsenal are now just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool following the Gunners 6-0 victory over Sheffield United on Monday. Attention now turns to Saturday when Mikel Arteta’s side entertain Brentford at Emirates Stadium.

A win would see Arsenal go top, with Liverpool and Manchester City clashing at Anfield on Sunday. Arteta does have fitness concerns, however, as both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli were taken off at Bramall

Lane.

Saka was brought off at half-time and was seen shaking his head to the Arsenal physio but did return to the bench before the full-time whistle. Martinelli, meanwhile, hopped off the field with the help of two members of the Arsenal staff and is suffering with a “slight cut”.

Elsewhere, former Gunners midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has insisted he has “no regrets” about his time in north London. Looking further ahead, Arsenal face Porto next week in the Champions League round of 16 second leg and the Portuguese side have somewhat of an advantage going into the fixture.

New Mikel Arteta to Barcelona claims emerge
Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta stands as one of Barcelona’s top candidates to replace outgoing manager Xavi Hernandez, claims the latest report from Spain.

According to Relevo, Barcelona have a desire for Arteta to lead them into a new era, much like he has done with the Gunners since 2019. Xavi is due to step down from his role at the end of this season.

According to the report Arteta is named as one ‘most liked’ options by both sporting director Deco and president Joan Laporta, who even ‘made a call’ about their upcoming vacant position. The attractiveness of the coach comes from his intense, attacking style of football, partnered with his track record of nurturing young players into the professional game.

Arsenal’s Nico Williams pursuit takes fresh twist
Arsenal’s pursuit of Nico Williams has taken a twist as Chelsea have also emerged as contenders for the winger’s signature.

Arsenal are keen to bolster the forward areas this summer and are assessing the market for potential additions. football.london understands that Nico Williams has emerged as one of these. Arsenal are thought to be admirers of the Spanish international who can play anywhere along the front line and has scored six goals and managed 11 assists this season.

Williams has a release clause of around £43million in his contract with Athletic Bilbao. That price could be driven up if a bidding war begins though, with Chelsea also thought to be keen on his signature.

Arsenal are also surveying the market for potential alternatives to Williams this summer and are understood to be looking at Wolves’ Pedro Neto. A deal for Brentford forward Ivan Toney seems unlikely as things stand though, with the Gunners far more likely to prioritise a player who can operate across the forward line rather than an out and out striker.

Liverpool boost
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah returned to training ahead of the Reds’ Europa League last-16 first leg against Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic.

Salah has played just 46 minutes since leaving the African Cup of Nations early with a hamstring injury on January 18. Those came in one substitute appearance against Brentford in mid-February, after which the 31-year-old was sidelined with what manager Jurgen Klopp said was muscle fatigue.

Salah’s return will be a huge boost for Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Klopp’s side welcome Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday while Arsenal could go top with a win vs Brentford.

Premier League to launch new FFP rules
The Premier League are bringing in new rules that will sanction clubs if they attempt to secure inflated sponsorship or transfer deals with clubs, companies or other organisations connected to their owners, new rules have revealed

The Times report that revised rules are now much tougher and have been put in place to prevent clubs earning unfair amounts of money via sponsorships directly related to the owner, or by signing players at discount rates from clubs within the same ownership group.

Clubs will face sanctions if they fail to “use all reasonable care” to make sure deals are within a fair market value, according to the league’s new handbook. And if any breaches do occur, an independent commission would have all penalties available to them, depending on how severe the breach was.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry makes ‘ridiculous’ Kylian Mbappe comment
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has heaped praise on France international Kylian Mbappe as he prepares to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer. The 25-year-old has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea after confirming he would not sign a contract extension at PSG last summer.

Despite being exiled from training ahead of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season, Mbappe was reintroduced and has since scored 34 goals in all competitions. Ahead of the Champions League last-16 clash against Real Sociedad, Mbappe revealed to the PSG hierarchy he would be heading for pastures new ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Madrid immediately appeared as the obvious destination and it looks as though he will be heading to the Bernabeu, with the forward having reportedly agreed a contract with the LaLiga giants. Interest from Emirates Stadium was present, however for financial reasons, a deal always looked very complicated to pull off.

However, there was always some hope given the legacy Henry left at Arsenal, with the France icon as one of Mbappe’s idols when growing up. Ahead of the Premier League clash against Sheffield United, Henry made his thoughts perfectly clear on the World Cup winner. “When the guy goes to a World Cup, goes to a final, he plays two World Cups and he’s been in two finals,” Henry admitted on Sky Sports.

“He scored a hat-trick in the final. He already scored four goals in the finals of World Cups. How long has he been playing? It’s just ridiculous. The sky’s the limit for him.”

Massive injury update emerges ahead of Arsenal vs Brentford
Bryan Mbeumo has returned to Brentford training ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Arsenal. The Cameroon international picked up a serious ankle injury in December during the defeat to Brighton which resulted in him missing the Africa Cup of Nations.

Prior to his injury, Mbuemo had become his club’s talisman in the absence of Ivan Toney with seven goals to his name from 15 Premier League appearances. Yoane Wissa has also been absent for a period of the season with injury issues and international commitments, however he has returned in recent weeks and his sublime overhead kick against Chelsea this past weekend was a clear reminder of his ability.

Arsenal transfer target Toney also returned to action back in January after serving an eight-month ban for betting offences. And with Mbuemo now nearing a return, Thomas Frank could have Wissa, Toney and Neal Maupay all available for the first time this season.

While his return could arrive as a huge boost, the Bees are dealing with a significant injury crisis in defence. Left-back Rico Henry has been joined by Aaron Hickey, Ethan Pinnock and Ben Mee, the remaining three members of Frank’s first-choice back four, in recent weeks as long-term absentees.

Emile Smith Rowe faces questions after latest Arsenal snub
As Arsenal strode to a five-goal first-half lead against Sheffield United, the eyes naturally get drawn to the bench to see who might get a chance. Mikel Arteta did indeed get the maximum use out of his five substitutions however there was no room for Emile Smith Rowe to come on.

Fabio Vieira replaced an ill Bukayo Saka at half-time before Cedric Soares, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus were introduced. Leandro Trossard was the final introduction who was brought on for the brilliant Declan Rice.

There was some frustration that Smith Rowe wasn’t given the chance but there are certainly explanations behind all of the choices Arteta made.

Thierry Henry on Declan Rice role
Thierry Henry has praised Declan Rice’s impact at Arsenal since joining from West Ham United in the summer.

Speaking after the Sheffield United game, Henry said:

People were talking about, and I know that I am going off last season, okay, [Granit] Xhaka last season, oh he is better. No, he is not better. He plays in a different position, so you cannot see his weaknesses where he used to lose the ball more often than not. Declan Rice, we know that he is magnificent there, but he playing higher than he has ever played in his career. So, obviously he is at the end of movement to give assist and to score goals. Look at him the run he made, you know the header against Luton when he goes into the box. He wants the ball, he is there, he is allowed because he has Jorginho under.

Mikel Arteta told Arsenal have their own Virgil van Dijk
Arsenal legend David O’Leary has compared William Saliba to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. The centre-back was part of the backline that recorded the club’s 11th clean sheet of the season on Monday night as the Gunners kept pace with their title rivals.

Mikel Arteta’s team are currently the top scorers in the Premier League after their 6-0 victory over Sheffield United. The Gunners also boast the best defence, having let in a total of 23 goals, with just three of those coming during their seven-game winning streak in 2024. Their clean sheet tally is also two better than Liverpool, who hold the next-best record in the Premier League.

Former defender David O’Leary, who holds the club record for most appearances, has likened William Saliba to Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk, crediting the France international for transforming Arsenal into title contenders.

“Saliba is like Van Dijk when Van Dijk came to Liverpool. To me he will only get better – he is a Rolls Royce,” O’Leary told talkSPORT, as reported by the Mirror. “I think him and Gabriel are a partnership that is consistently as good as anybody in the Premier League. And what has brought them further on this year is the great Declan Rice sitting in front of them who has been awesome.

“That three there have been absolutely phenomenal. They are the backbone really. For the push now until the end of the season, it is vitally important that you don’t lose these three.”

Declan Rice has done what Graeme Souness asked
Declan Rice has given the perfect response to Graeme Souness after reaching a new milestone with Arsenal. His goal against Sheffield United on Monday was his fifth this season, making it his most successful one yet.

Liverpool legend and pundit Graeme Souness has long claimed he feels Rice needs to contribute more in an attacking sense.

Souness first mentioned this when rumours of Rice’s transfer started, and he repeated it after the move to Arsenal was confirmed. “The only criticism I had of Declan [Rice], was that he did not get enough goals, and I am still standing by that,” Souness told talkSPORT back in July.

“Just because you’re a defensive midfield player does not mean you can’t chip in with goals. He has to chip in with more. Arsenal finished second last year, and he will undoubtedly improve them. Can they make that jump from second to first because of Declan? Possibly, but he needs to chip in with more goals.

“For the defensive midfielder he is, he has a defensive head, he sees the danger, deals with it, he is extremely athletic, and goes up and down the park. I just want him to be coming on to balls in and around the box, he is attacking, let him go. There is no reason he can’t get double figures every year playing for that Arsenal team.”

Rice has quickly shown what he’s made of, scoring five goals and making five assists in the league this season. That is the most amount of goal contributions the England international has managed in one season.

Arsenal have two options to replace Saka and Martinelli for Brentford
It’s currently unclear if Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli will be fit for Arsenal’s next Premier League match against Brentford. The duo were brought off by Mikel Arteta during the 6-0 victory over Sheffield United.

“[Saka] was feeling a bit sick and as well we have Fabio who we have to give minutes,” Arteta said. “It was great opportunity [for us] and then we had a little issue with Gabi Martinelli as well, he had a slight cut on his foot and we have to wait and see how he is.”

If the issues are worse than initially feared or potentially Arteta chooses not to risk the pair with the game against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League just days after, the Spaniard will need to change things in the front line.

Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard are perhaps the two best replacements, should both players not make the match at Emirates Stadium. Of course, a lot can happen between now and Saturday.

Matteo Guendouzi on what went wrong at Arsenal
Matteo Guendouzi was axed from Arsenal’s matchday squads after grabbing Neal Maupay’s neck towards the end of a 2-1 defeat at Brighton on June 20, 2020.

When asked about that incident, in what would be his last game for Arsenal, Guendouzi told The Athletic: “A lot of things can happen on the pitch and sometimes some players say some things you don’t accept and that’s why we had some problems when we played this game against Brighton.

“But that’s in the past, I’m just focused on the future.”

On Arteta and Arsenal’s title aspirations this season, the midfielder added: “I didn’t work with Arteta a lot, I only had six months. I was 19, so I was learning every day.

“I wouldn’t make the same mistakes I did when I was 19. But in football, every day you learn and mistakes are part of football. Mistakes are part of life. You become a better man and a better footballer with mistakes. For me, it was a very good club because I played a lot.

“Arteta is doing a very good job at Arsenal, they are fighting for the title, they are a very good team and he’s doing amazing things. I hope they will get a trophy because Arsenal is a big club. I wish the best for them.”

Matteo Guendouzi has ‘no regrets’ about leaving Arsenal
Former Arsenal mdifielder Matteo Guendouzi has opened up on his time at Arsenal. The 24-year-old featured heavily for the Gunners during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, helping them win the FA Cup in August 2020. But things turned sour at the end of 2020 and after two loan spells he was sold to Marseille in the summer of 2022.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic, the Frenchman said: “I have no regrets about what I did at Arsenal. I was 19 and I went on to play 85 games in two years. Eighty-five games for a big club like Arsenal is a lot.

“I tried to give my best for the club. In my first season, we finished fifth, just one point behind the Champions League places, and we lost in the Europa League final. When you finish fifth in England, it’s like second or third in other leagues.

“England is very competitive, even with the teams at the bottom; it’s maybe the biggest league in the world because every game is very, very difficult. I am very happy about what I did there.

“The next season we won the FA Cup. I was so young, I played a lot, I was very happy with this. I learnt a lot with great players. Mesut Ozil was the best, an amazing player with the ball — he sees things you would never see in your life.

“I was lucky to work under Unai Emery, he was an amazing manager. He’s now doing a top job with Aston Villa. He gave me the confidence to play, so I was very lucky to work with him.

“The last six months of my second season was not perfect because I didn’t play a lot, unlike the first year.”

Chelsea get sensational Mykhailo Mudryk to Arsenal transfer message
Chelsea have been told to sell Mykhailo Mudryk if a suitable offer arrives given their fragile financial predicament. The Blues signed Mudryk in January 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal initially worth £62million that could rise to £88.5million in potential add-ons.

A bright debut against Liverpool at Anfield saw many believe Chelsea had found a gem, however just under 14 months on and it’s fair to say he has significantly struggled at Stamford Bridge. Mudryk has managed just five goals and five assists since joining the club, with one of his first competitive goals coming against Arsenal, the club who had been in pole position to sign him until Chelsea swooped in.

While the boat seems to have passed on Mudryk ever joining Arsenal, William Gallas has made quite the claim about his future if the Gunners were to ever be interested again.

“If Arsenal still want Mykhailo Mudryk and come in with a big fee, Chelsea will have no option but to sell him because of their financial issues,” Gallas, formerly of both Arsenal and Chelsea, told Lord Ping. “How Chelsea have got themselves in this situation is confusing. Chelsea will need to think properly on how to sort out their problems, otherwise the fans will continue to be frustrated.”

Premier League title predictions
The race to win the 2023/24 Premier League promises to be one of the most exciting in years. Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal are all battling it out to be crowned champions come May 19.

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently lead the way with 63 points. Manchester City, however, are just one point behind the Reds with 62 points, while Arsenal are in third with 61 points.

Following their 6-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday night, the Gunners are the league’s most in-form team at present. Mikel Arteta’s side have won their previous seven league games, scoring 31 goals in the process.

Next weekend could have huge ramifications in the title race as Liverpool welcome Man City to Anfield. With both sides potentially taking points off each other, Arsenal could go top if they beat Brentford at Emirates Stadium nearly 24 hours earlier.

Phil Foden sends ominous warning to Arsenal and Liverpool
Phil Foden has sent a strong message of intent Arsenal and Liverpool after Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola called him the best player in the Premier League.

And after firing a brace in the Manchester derby on Sunday, Foden is confident he can improve even more. The England forward scored twice in the second half of City’s 3-1 win over Manchester United, taking his goal tally for the season to 18, his best return in senior football.

Guardiola thinks Foden is the best player in the Premier League right now, But the 23-year-old believes he can become even better and more dangerous on the pitch. “I think I’m playing my best football, consistently as well,” said Foden (as per the Mirror). “I’m really happy with the way I’m playing and I want to keep it up. I think I’ve just grown as a player.

“Each year, I put the work in on the training pitch and now I’m getting the rewards that I believe I deserve. I want to keep it up, keep working hard and hopefully keep scoring many more goals. I’ve been practising on my finishing this year quite a lot after training. I’m really delighted with this one. I want to be that player. I want to win games for the team and turn up in the biggest games.

“I’ve got a good run of games now I seem to be starting a lot more and I think that helps to find your feet. I want to be involved in goals and always be in the box. It’s coming off well this year and I want to score even more.”

Guardiola makes Champions League point
Pep Guardiola claims winning the Champions League is getting tougher every season.

City will look to cement their place in the quarter-finals of this year’s competition on Wednesday when they go into the second leg of their last-16 tie against FC Copenhagen holding a 3-1 aggregate lead. Arsenal, meanwhile, face Porto next week hoping to overturn a 1-0 first leg defeat.

City manager Guardiola said: “It’s getting better and tougher. Always I had the feeling, when I arrived in Barcelona in the first years that OK, we arrive in semi-finals. Now to reach the semi-finals is so difficult. The teams are better, managers are better.

“Everything is even more difficult than when I was a football player. But at the end, the better teams always go through. When you play two good games, you have more chance to go through.”

Petit says Rice reminds him of himself
One Premier League title winner to another?

Emmanuel Petit says that Declan Rice’s style does remind him of himself during his time at Arsenal. He told wettfreunde.net:

“Declan Rice also gives the feeling as if he has been playing at Arsenal for several years. He takes responsibility, he always knows where to go. He integrated quickly and well.”

“It is particularly important for the young players because they can follow it at any time. He is also very present in the big games.”

“Back then, I also always pushed forward when I was lined up as an eight [when asked if Declan Rice reminds him of his playing days].”

“This gave me an urge to move forward because I could enjoy a certain amount of freedom.”

“Depending on the opponent, it is even more important in today’s football for players to be more tactically flexible so that their own team can also act a little more unpredictable.”

Arsenal will be without David Raya in the weekend clash vs Brentford, as the goalkeeper is unable to face his parent club.

Arsenal injury latest as five players could miss Brentford
Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli were taken off during Arsenal’s 6-0 win at Sheffield United in what is a fresh headache for Mikel Arteta.

Saka was seen shaking his head after taking a shot in the first-half and spoke to the club physio as he headed down the tunnel. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Saka is injured. “Bukayo was feeling sick and he wasn’t feeling right so we decided to take him off and bring Fabio in,” Arteta explained after the match.

Fellow winger Martinelli was also forced off at Bramall Lane. The Brazilian came off after 64 minutes after scoring his eighth goal of the season. Martinelli took a blow to his foot when attempting a shot on goal and was helped off the pitch by two physios. Arteta provided a brief update on the Brazilian after the win, saying: “We had a little issue with Gabi Martinelli. He had a little cut in his foot. We need to see how it is.”

The attacking duo could be forced to sit out Saturday’s clash with Brentford at the Emirates Stadium. However, there is hope that Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu could return to the squad after being out with calf problems.

Jurrien Timber has been sidelined for the majority of the season after suffering an ACL injury in August. He has returned to part team training but isn’t expected to be involved with the team until there’s a green light from the medical department.

Chelsea cool Toney interest
If Arsenal want to sign Ivan Toney in the summer, they may just have been given a boost.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have cooled their interest in the Brentford striker, in part due to his age.

Speaking on the Caught Offside podcast, Romano stated that the Blues are targeting a different profile of striker now, meaning the Gunners or Manchester United could capitalise.

“I’m not sure Chelsea are that convinced on Ivan Toney anymore, I think they’ve started to look at different kinds of strikers in terms of age. Toney could be an option for Arsenal, but we’ll see.

“Manchester United will also be in the market for a striker – they have to decide internally if they want an experienced striker, and if so Toney could be a fantastic opportunity.”

Seven players to miss Liverpool vs Man City title showdown
The Premier League title race is heating up, and this weekend’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City could be a game-changer. However, both teams have been dealt major injury blows, with seven players set to miss the showdown.

Jamie Carragher pokes fun at Martin Odegaard
Jamie Carragher addressed the elephant in the room during Martin Odegaard’s awkward post-match interview on Sky Sports. The 25-year-old midfielder led Arsenal to a resounding 6-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday evening, keeping his side’s title dreams alive.

After the game, Odegaard was quizzed on the Gunners’ performance at Bramall Lane by the Monday Night Football panel. David Jones and Thierry Henry kicked off the interview by asking the Norway international for his thoughts on Arsenal’s attitude, the upturn in form since their warm weather break in Dubai, and Manchester City’s clash against Liverpool this weekend.

For large parts of the exchange, Odegaard remained relatively coy and rattled off a few customary cliches. Then, it was Carragher’s turn to ask a question. The former Liverpool defender was eager to break the ice following his heated rant about the Gunners captain last month.

The former Liverpool defender said: “Martin it was a fantastic performance by yourself, great win for the team… I just didn’t see the photographer on the pitch. Is he in the dressing room?”

Carragher, Henry and Jones burst out laughing. The Arsenal skipper replied: “I was waiting for you to say something. I was too scared to do it today, I went straight inside today.”

Declan Rice has hit back at claims that Arsenal need a new No.9 in the summer following a remarkable run of form for the attack, with 31 goals in seven games in the league.

“I think that was a narrative that we weren’t creating chances, that we needed a No.9, but in all honesty, we have been playing like this all year,” he told reporters at Bramall Lane. “All season we have been playing really well. Henry and Carragher on Arsenal playing Man City
Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry have had their say on Arsenal and their upcoming fixture against Manchester City. The Gunners travel to Etihad Stadium on March 31 and the outcome of the match could have a huge impact on the title race.

As part of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage, Henry was asked if Arsenal’s game against Manchester City decides their season. He said: “I have been waiting for us to go there and put a good performance, but it’s not easy to go to the Etihad to do that.

“I am not saying that we will lose, but if you lose at City it isn’t the end of the world. But right now, especially with the way the league looks right now, you don’t want to go there and get outplayed. I am with Mikel, I am focusing on Brentford. Last year was a tough game so let’s focus on Brentford and see what we can do. Porto is coming and there are a lot of things on the way.”

Carragher added: “I actually think playing City there is possibly the best time to play them in that City looked out of this world yesterday, they have to go to Liverpool which will be a tough game, but on the back of an international break it always feels a little bit like you have to get back into it.

“You come back and have two or three days training, everyone has been away and whether Man City may not be in the rhythm that we saw yesterday. I think that is possible, if you are going to play them at any time, it might be the best time to play them.”

He added: “We know it is a tough place to come. We did very good from the start and took control of the game. We know what their game is like, they want to play a lot of direct football and we had to be ready for that. When we had the ball, we were in a good mood today, we created a lot, we scored the goals early on and kept on going from there, so in the end it was a solid and nice performance.”

Thierry Henry makes Arsenal striker point
Thierry Henry was part of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage during Sheffield United vs Arsenal last night.

Following the game, the Frenchman was asked if he was pleased about the result. He said:

Yes, and you know why I am pleased? I am really pleased because that discussion about buying a striker and everyone was like they must go and buy a striker in January? No. They must finish their chances. I know I said it before, we have had that discussion so many times. Are they going to go for a big striker in the summer? That is a different discussion. They were creating but they just needed to put the ball in the back of the net. But, the way we are playing at the minute is outstanding, but I am always the type of guy who will say if I don’t see you with the trophy in your hands at the end, I can’t celebrate that too much. But, I am very happy with that.

The attractiveness of the coach comes from his intense, attacking style of football, partnered with his track record of nurturing young players into the professional game
