Deal in progress ✅: Arsenal could now target £33m midfielder instead of Douglas Luiz in January

Arsenal may well try to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in the current January transfer window.

Arsenal do seem to be keen to bolster their midfield contingent. The north London outfit have been linked with a number of targets who could swell their ranks in the middle of the park. Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz has even been dubbed Mikel Arteta’s “dream” January addition.
However, Aston Villa would surely be reluctant to part with the Brazilian ace. As such, Arsenal may well be forced to pivot to alternative targets.

One such target could be Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. The 22-year-old, who arrived at Goodison Park in a £33 million switch from French side Lille in the summer of 2022, is apparently on the Gunners’ radar.

According to journalist Alex Crook, speaking on talkSPORT (02/01/2024, 07:39), “the other player to keep an eye on with Arsenal is Amadou Onana at Everton, who we know Chelsea were looking at previously. And with Everton’s financial predicament there is a possibility that he could be sold this month.”
Everton certainly are in a tough situation financially. Earlier this season, the Toffees were handed a ten-point deduction due to their failure to comply with Premier League financial rules.

As such, the Merseyside outfit may well feel that they need to make sales this winter in order to raise funds where they can. This could open the door for Arsenal to snap up Onana for a decent price.
Should Arsenal sign Amadou Onana?

The Belgian powerhouse certainly has huge potential. He is strong, athletic, and capable of making an impact at both ends of the pitch. There are still some rough edges to his game, as he does not always make the best decisions when on the ball, but the quality is clearly there. He would add a new dimension to Arteta’s midfield contingent, providing a more youthful alternative to the likes of Jorginho, Mohamed Elneny, and Thomas Partey.

Arsenal’s midfield is due a refresh. Jorginho, Partey, and Elneny are all likely coming towards the end of their time with the club. As things stand, only Declan Rice represents the long-term future of the club in that part of the pitch.

Onana would be able to feature alongside the former West Ham United man in a double-pivot at the base of the midfield, if Arteta opted to change up his tactics. Alternatively, Rice could be pushed forward into one of the more advanced midfield roles, with Onana in behind. Or Onana could simply provide able back up and competition for the England star.
