Arsenal

Forward Arsenal sold for less than £1m now ‘wanted’ by Man Utd and Tottenham

Arsenal could be left red-faced after allowing a Man Utd and Tottenham target to leave for a meagre sum.

Donyell Malen was once on the books of Arsenal but the striker is now reportedly high on the shortlists of rivals Manchester United and Tottenham after being let go by the Gunners for a measly £500,000 in 2017. Malen has blossomed since departing the Emirates Stadium but has now hit a crossroads at Borussia Dortmund, with the impending arrival of Jadon Sancho likely to slash his game time.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a prolific spell in Arsenal’s academy after joining from Ajax in 2015. He even appeared for the senior team in a 2017 friendly against Sydney

But a blocked route into the first team saw Malen seek a departure. PSV snapped up the Dutchman for a mere £500k, a fee that could be made to look miniscule compared to what United or Spurs may pay for the attacker.

Malen’s spell with PSV was incredibly successful. He scored 55 goals in 116 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, earning a £25m move to Dortmund in the summer of 2021, funded by Sancho’s £75m switch to United

Sancho’s return to Dortmund on loan this January could see Malen become available for a move, though. The striker, who can also play out wide, has disappointed in the Bundesliga, scoring only five times this season

According to The Times, Dortmund are open to a sale in the region of £26m. If United or Tottenham can help Malen rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s hottest strikers at PSV, then they would be getting a bargain at that price.

Both Premier League clubs have been linked with the player. Attacking reinforcements are required by the duo as they plot an improved second half of the Premier League season
United’s preferred front three of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony have combined to score just four league goals this term, with Rashford bagging three of those. Meanwhile, Spurs are yet to properly replace Harry Kane after the striker’s £100m transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer.

Richarlison has hit form in recent weeks and has now scored six Premier League goals since Kane’s departure. However, Ange Postecoglou would benefit from a more prolific forward able to elevate his side into the Champions League mix.

Malen could be that player. A £26m fee should not be out of reach for either United or Spurs this January, making it a deal both clubs should be trying to complete – shaming Arsenal for selling such a highly-rated prospect for a tiny sum.
