Garth Crooks says £30m man was Arsenal’s best player vs Sheffield United last night

Garth Crooks has named the Arsenal player he believed was the star of the show on Monday night in their emphatic 6-0 win over Sheffield United, as he labelled one pass he played ‘sensational’.

Very rarely does a Premier League game play out exactly how you would imagine. But the clash at Bramall Lane would have been exactly what many expected.

Arsenal were absolutely relentless in the first-half. The warning signs were there from the opening seconds. And Martin Odegaard was the man to break the deadlock inside the first five minutes.

The 25-year-old continued to pull the strings across the evening. No player provided more key passes than the Norwegian, according to Whoscored. Meanwhile, he also completed three dribbles.

Ultimately, every single Arsenal player can be happy with their performance. But speaking to BBC Sport, Garth Crooks suggested that Odegaard proved to be the standout performer on a nearly perfect night for Mikel Arteta’s side.

“Arsenal had cut Sheffield United open on two occasions in the 6-0 win on Monday before Martin Odegaard scored their opening goal. The ball he then sent to Gabriel Martinelli from inside his own half was sensational and a statement of intent if ever I saw one,” he said.

“Arsenal were 3-0 up in a matter of 15 minutes, Sheffield United had made their first substitution and home fans were streaming out of Bramall Lane in droves. Arsenal were brutal, Bukayo Saka was having the time of his life and by the time the Gunners were 5-0 up Sheffield United were praying for the half-time whistle. This was a walk in the park for the visitors and I could have selected anyone in an Arsenal shirt, but the star of the show was Odegaard and that’s why he’s in my team.”

Odegaard appears to have taken his game to another level this season. His talent has never been in doubt. But the £30 million man has definitely grown as a leader.

Thierry Henry suggested that Odegaard does not get enough credit for how good he is off the ball. And that may well be down to how good he is when he is in possession.

What is frightening is that Odegaard is not alone in being so impressive this season. Arsenal had six different goalscorers on Monday. And they have now scored 31 goals in the last seven games in the Premier League.

It is going to take something special to beat Arsenal to the title this season.
