Gary Lineker amazed by the ‘great character’ £30m Arsenal player showed against Brentford

Gary Lineker has now been praising an individual Arsenal performance after yesterday’s late but vital win against Brentford.

Mikel Arteta’s side didn’t run away with the game like they have in recent weeks, and they did have to overcome some adversity.

The Emirates was a mix of both sympathy and frustration when Aaron Ramsdale delayed on the ball, allowing Brentford to punish his lack of sharpness.

But ultimately, as Arsenal were able to win, that performance should actually stand the side well given their task against a determined FC Porto side on Tuesday

Arsenal will face another low block for much of the game, and the likes of Ben White and Kai Havertz did prove their ability to overcome such a scenario.

Arteta turned to his whole squad during the game, introducing the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Reiss Nelson.

However, it was pretty telling that he left Havertz on the pitch, a player who is becoming increasingly clutch.

That being said, it was Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale that Gary Lineker praised when reviewing the win against Brentford on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

Although Ramsdale nearly cost Arsenal the three points with his mistake, he showed remarkable courage to pick himself up and improve.

And when analysing Arsenal’s win alongside Ashley Williams, Lineker loved how Ramsdale recovered against Brentford

Lineker said: “Aaron Ramsdale will be relieved, although he showed great character in the second half.”

Williams replied: “Yeah he’s come in for Raya and I’m pretty sure he just wanted a quiet day in the game today and that’s exactly what didn’t happen for him.

“Just before half-time the ball goes back to Gabriel, as he plays it back you can see Wissa, he’s putting pressure on him straight away, he takes way too long and he gets caught with it.

“He does this thing where when he takes his first touch he steps out right, he has this little stutter, we’ve highlighted Saliba – he can just give him it.”
