JUST IN: Arsenal second January signing arrived London colney after signing 5yr deal with Arsenal – He will be announced tonight

Arsenal see signing either Martin Zubimendi or Douglas Luiz as preferable to bringing Amadou Onana to the club.

Arsenal have been linked with a host of potential midfield signings in recent weeks.
This makes sense, as the Gunners are due an overhaul in this part of the pitch. There is good reason to believe that none of Thomas Partey, Jorginho, or Mohamed Elneny will be on the books at the Emirates Stadium next season.

Partey’s poor fitness record means that Mikel Arteta simply cannot rely on him to be fit and available when needed. As such, amid interest in his services from Saudi Arabia, the time has come for the north London club to move on from the Ghanaian.

Jorginho has proven himself to be a reliable rotation option since his arrival from Chelsea last January. However, the 32-year-old has flaws in his game, and as things stand, unless the Gunners opt to trigger the extension clause in his existing contract, he is due to become a free agent this summer. Jorginho’s agent has already confessed that talks over fresh terms with Arsenal have reached a “standstill.”
Elneny is another player who will be out of contract in the summer, and the north London club are actively seeking to move the Egyptian veteran on this month. Elneny loves Arsenal, and has been an admirable servant to the club, but he is not of the standard required for a side with Premier League title-winning ambitions.

If this trio does depart, that will leave Declan Rice as the only recognised senior option able to sit in front of the back four.
How do Arsenal rank Martin Zubimendi, Douglas Luiz, and Amadou Onana?

Clearly, Arsenal will need reinforcements in this part of the pitch come the summer. Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz has been dubbed Arteta’s “dream signing.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal sporting director Edu is thought to be willing to trigger the £52 million release clause of Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi, who has been hailed as the “next Busquets.”

However, Everton powerhouse Amadou Onana is said to be open to a move to the Emirates Stadium. The Belgian has top flight experience in England, and huge potential. He would be an exciting addition to Arteta’s ranks.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed, though, that Onana is the Gunners’ least favoured choice out of the aforementioned trio. Speaking on The Football Terrace, the reporter said, “if you were to rank Arsenal’s top two midfield targets even above the links with Onana, it would be Zubimendi and Douglas Luiz. I think those would be the two if they had carte blanche that they would move for.”
We know they have tried for Zubimendi in the past, he is very happy at Sociedad, they are having an incredible season so I would expect them not to pre-agree anything. But the Arenal interest hasn’t gone away.”

It will be fascinating to see which of these three targets, if any, Arsenal choose to pursue as a priority in the summer.
