The spending spree at Stamford Bridge is showing no signs of slowing, but swap deals would certainly relieve some of the Financial Fair Play stress. Ian Maatsen remains in talks to join Borussia Dortmund but would be the ideal candidate to be involved in such transfers, as well as wantaway stars Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah.

Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja are both also being edged towards the exit and they could be offered as a way to knock the prices down of Brentford’s Ivan Toney or Brighton’s Evan Ferguson.

Mikel Arteta is keen to continue adding to his squad, which has attracted interest from other Premier League outfits in their fringe stars. Brentford have registered an interest in both Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, which presents an interesting opportunity for a player-plus-cash deal involving Toney and could prompt Brentford to change their ‘no sale stance

Emile Smith Rowe is also struggling for minutes and he could be on the move, with Aston Villa holding a long-term interest in acquiring the services of the England international. He could be seen as a potential makeweight if Douglas Luiz or Ollie Watkins are pursued, though deals of that calibre may be pushed back to the summer – given Villa’s surprise charge at the top end of the table.

Jurgen Klopp is not expecting to be overly busy this month, though he could be tempted to make minor tweaks to his squad with swap deals involving out-of-favour stars. Second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with an exit from Anfield on numerous occasions, with playmaker Fabio Carvalho now on the lookout for a new club after being recalled from his loan spell at RB Leipzig.

Thiago Alcantara’s continued injury problems remain an ongoing issue for the Reds, and the Spaniard could be a great starting point for negotiations with Bayern Munich for Leroy Sane. The winger has been linked with a move to Merseyside previously and a return to the Bundesliga is unlikely to be turned down by Thiago given his successful spell previously.
