Mikel Arteta makes a point of celebrating David Raya’s contribution to Leandro Trossard’s goal against Crystal Palace as under pressure keeper silences his doubters

David Raya has faced plenty of scrutiny since he joined Arsenal but the goalkeeper did exactly what Mikel Arteta brought him in to do on Saturday.

Eyebrows were raised when the Spanish stopper joined the Gunners on an initial £3m loan with an option to buy for £27m.

He almost immediately replaced fan-favourite Aaron Ramsdale with Arteta looking for a keeper with more ability to play out from the back.

Raya has had his nervy moments since then but showed why Arteta brought him as he kick-started the counter-attack for Arsenal’s third goal against Crystal Palace.

A move from the visitors failed to materialize and Raya brilliantly freed Gabriel Jesus on the break

Arteta look thrilled and immediately pointed and clapped in the direction of the keeper to acknowledge his contribution to the goal.

Raya’s distribution was the biggest factor in his arrival and Arteta was clearly delighted to see him display it after facing plenty of criticism for his decision to bring him in.

The Gunners bounced back from three straight defeats, thrashing the Eagles 5-0

Defender Gabriel netted twice from set-pieces before Trossard’s strike. Gabriel Martinelli then came on to net a fine brace in the closing stages
