Ramsdale joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021, and quickly surpassed now Fulham goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, to the top spot between the sticks. However, at the beginning of this season, the England international had the same fate as his German counterpart after former Brentford player, David Raya, joined the Gunners on a season-long loan with an option to purchase of £27million next summer.

The Englishman started the first four games in the current campaign, and despite keeping a clean-sheet when facing Crystal Palace, two goals that went Fulham’s way against the Gunners meant that Ramsdale conceded an average of one goal per game. Since replacing Ramsdale, Raya has started all Premier League matches that he has been eligible for, but Ramsdale has been given opportunities in Arsenal’s eventual 3-1 defeat to West Ham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, and in the UEFA Champions League at PSV Eindhoven after securing knockout qualification.

However, Ramsdale’s infrequent opportunities do not actually seem to give him the chance to replace the current no.1 as Arteta is currently happy with Raya’s performances. With this, it would seem logical for the 25 year-old to seek a move away with the European Championships on the horizon, and Newcastle United may be the perfect fit.

However, Manchester United veteran and current free agent, David de Gea, is also of interest to the northern side. Of course, last season’s Premier League golden boot winner will come at no cost to Newcastle, but the goalkeeper will reportedly need to accept a significant reduction in the wage of his previous £375,000-a-week contract to see the move materialise.
