‘No disrespect’… Micah Richards suggests 23-year-old Arsenal player is being wasted this season

Micah Richards has now been having his say on Arsenal’s goal-scoring troubles under Mikel Arteta in the past few weeks.

Three consecutive losses have caused big concern among the Arsenal fan base, who are now calling for January additions.

And with that in mind, Micah Richards has been discussing some of the mistakes that both Arsenal and Arteta may have made in the summer.

Speaking on the ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Richards discussed the signing of Kai Havertz in the summer, saying the money may have been better spent on a forward.

And when justifying his point, Richards suggested that Emile Smith Rowe was ready and waiting to play a big role this season – a player who could have done the job of Havertz.

Michah Richards suggests Mikel Arteta has wasted Emile Smith Rowe at Arsenal this season
Speaking on the podcast, Richards said: “What I don’t understand about Arsenal is that Havertz is a very good player and I’m one of the people who think he can fit into a system and he can look very well.

“His touch is good, I think the way he opens up and wants to pass, I think he slows it down at times. But we all could see, and we were saying it last season, that Arsenal needed a striker.

You have £60 million for a player who, no disrespect, if I’m looking at Smith Rowe, I know he has had his injuries, but he can do the job that Havertz can do in my opinion.

“So that £60 million has to be invested in a forward player, we know what Jesus can do in a forward role. We know Nketiah towards the end of last season played very well as well, but you are thinking you are up against Liverpool and Man City, who have got firepower.

“A striker had to be the priority for me and now you are seeing in these little moments, the game yesterday it was so evident, when you just need someone to have a cool head in front of goal at this moment in time Arsenal have not got that.”

He’s got a point
Richards is right to point out Havertz’s strong attributes, they shouldn’t be forgotten, but he was always going to be a luxury for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal this season

Havertz should still prove to be a very clever signing with time, but it’s very clear that a striker was better needed in the summer with hindsight

Had a profile like Ivan Toney or Dusan Vlahovic arrived, Arsenal may still be flying high at the top of the league.

Instead, we’re into the second half of the season and Arteta is still searching for a goal-scorer.

That being said, it seems that Arsenal are now making progress with a different kind of signing in recent days.
