Rio Ferdinand names the one Arsenal player who was ‘brilliant’ against Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand has named the Arsenal player he thought was brilliant in their FA Cup defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side were knocked out of the FA Cup, with two late goals seeing the Reds edge the tie at the Emirates.

Arsenal did play well, particularly in the first-half. However, Kai Havertz was amongst those to miss some golden opportunities. In fact, the Germany international struggled to really test Alisson.

Rio Ferdinand praises William Saliba despite Arsenal loss
Arsenal have been really poor in the final third for some time now. The Gunners have lost their last three in all competitions. And they have only scored a handful of goals in the last few weeks.

But there was one player who really impressed Rio Ferdinand with his performance against Liverpool at the weekend. Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand suggested that William Saliba can hold his head up high.

“I thought Saliba was brilliant,” he said.

“Havertz had some good chances, man. The one that got rolled to him from Odegaard, he should’ve smashed it left foot.”

Problems at both ends of the pitch
Saliba has remained one of Arsenal’s most impressive players this season. Losing Saliba to injury arguably cost Arsenal the title last year.

And the 22-year-old has continued to do well, despite the Gunners not looking anywhere near as exciting this time around.

Saliba has arguably continued to get better and remain one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

The worry – apart from how wasteful they are in front of goal – is that Arsenal now look vulnerable at the back, particularly from set-pieces.

Ben White has been quiet this season. Meanwhile, Oleksandr Zinchenko has come in for criticism. Arsenal have now kept one clean sheet in the league since the end of November.

Ian Wright said that he felt sorry for Saliba and Declan Rice after yesterday’s defeat. Certainly, it feels as though many of their teammates are really struggling to find anything like the form they showed last year.
