Theo Walcott surprised by what he saw from Declan Rice in Arsenal vs Porto

Theo Walcott was surprised by one aspect of Declan Rice’s performance as Arsenal took on Porto in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

The 34-year-old made the comments while covering the game for BBC Radio 5 Live.

So, what did Theo Walcott say about Arsenal No.41 Declan Rice? Let’s take a look…

Theo Walcott has one criticism of Declan Rice
Well, the man who made 397 appearances for Arsenal – scoring 108 goals – was surprised by how little the England international got on the ball against Porto.

Walcott said: “Arsenal need to enjoy themselves, they did that in snippets in the first half, but I want to see it even more. I want to see Declan Rice get on the ball more, control the midfield.”

The £105m man has often been Arsenal’s midfield general this season, taking the ball in seemingly uncomfortable areas before driving forward confidently to kickstart attacks.

However, Rice struggled to do that against a Porto side who sat deep for most of tonight’s Round of 16 clash, refusing to allow Arsenal much space to surge into.

Arsenal No.41 struggled to impose himself vs Porto
Rice performed well against Porto, but there is no denying that he was far from his imperious best.

As SofaScore shows, the Londoner only completed 46 passes in 120 minutes of action against the Portuguese giants, with none of those going down as key passes.

The Arsenal No.41 also failed to attempt a singe dribble, which is especially disappointing seeing as this has become a pivotal feature of his game in recent times
